Hire A Composer

'What the world needs now. Is love sweet love'.
So goes the lyrics to the timeless Burt Bacharach and Hal David classic released in 1965 with a very clever sub text of protesting against America's involvement in the Vietnam War.
Monumental events have always inspired filmmakers and creative minds and this current Covid-19 pandemic will be no different. Already there is a film by Canadian director Mostafa Keshvari depicting a group of 7 unfortunate people trapped in a lift and one person coughs to the alarm of all the other occupants. The film is Corona Fear and plays on the idea of being too close for comfort to strangers and also our Xenophobia as the characters who coughs is , yes you guessed it Chinese. The film is now available to screen on various streaming platforms. The idea was quickly realised and released. It was shot ,cut and made by 8th March, well before we went into world lockdown. That's a director seeing an opportunity. He is quoted as saying ' your life is a movie, direct it before someone elese will'. He certainly did and didn't mess around and will make a name for himself.
However when is it too soon to cover these sort events in a creative way without causing offence or hurt or being accused of trying to make a name for yourself from someones else's misery. That is cashing in. After 9/11 Hollywood decided the best way was silence. That's not say screenwriters and filmmakers were busy hatching their plots and productions way before the first movie came out commercially about the events of the destruction of the Twin Towers. Once one was released there was an avalanche of same themed productions as Hollywood did some serious soul searching. Just after watching Flight 93, there was United 93.
Of course some argue that the flying of hijacked planes into buildings was influenced by the movies the extremists watched. Popular culture pervades all.
So how will creatives look at the virus pandemic. The film Contagion pre dated the notion of a virus escaping and infecting the world. We watched in horror and thought how terrifying that would be. But we calmed ourselves by saying that's just a film, entertainment, it wouldn't happen here. Would it?
So how will this pandemic be depicted in movies, drama, and video. No doubt there will be many hospital based dramas giving us the life and death survival at the frontline. Real drama about love and loss. The story of doctors's and nurses struggling against all odds to combat the pandemic. There is also the insight into the impact it is having on the rest of the world stuck in limbo, stuck in lockdown unable to carry on. Will filmmakers explore the endless hours of spending time in your own house. Re arranging bookshelves or painting your living room or doing star jumps to Joe Wicks. Maybe a remake of Chariots of Fire, running laps around your garden. At least the location budget will be small. Plus the cast will be too. Perfect for small scale films and video with an excellent script and delving into the dynamics of personal relationships. There will be a return to the kitchen sink drama. No explosive effects, car chases or CGI worlds but real characters feeling to effects on our lives through social confinement.
It might be a real opportunity to explore what really matters in film, the portrayal of humanity, how we feel and interact with others.
Now is the time to hatch these mini dramas and consider how the artistic world will respond and depict these extraordinary events. After all as Louis Armstrong sang ' We have all the time in the world'
